«Cocaine« can it outplay »Red Bull«

Will you stay loyal to the wings of »Red Bull«?...
even after the launch of the New Soft Drink «Cocaine«.

Today I cannot resist anymore to quote this post, haunting through the web for many days now. »Red Bull« http://www.redbull.at/ is the Austrian success story of the last century I dare to say. We as Austrians are proud of it. I know that many of the guys around me are hooked on »Red Bull«.
What do think out there, has «Cocaine« got a chance to outweigh Red Bull in Europe like »Red Bull« dominates the US energy drink market?

Las Vegas-based Redux Beverages recently rolled out their marketing campaign for the new energy drink Cocaine http://www.drinkcocaine.com/. It compares in calories to Red Bull (only 70 vs. Red Bull’s 80) but weighs in with 350 percent more caffeine (280 mg, about the same as four espresso shots). The drink also boasts an instant rush with no crash. How’s it taste? The drink is only available in select Los Angeles and New York locations, as well as a few events, such as New York Fashion Week (supposedly, it’ll be on Amazon.com soon). However, the kids at Best Week Ever got their hands on some, and they say the stuff burns – a sensation we try to avoid.

Let's wait and see whether the buzz is huge enough!

Was lehrt uns das?

Biestmilch: a placebo? Part II

Since I am working with biestmilch I was and am still confronted many times with sayings like: »It really helped me, this stuff, and, even, if it were only a placebo, it did some good to me, and that's okay for me then«.

Why do we like to push phenomena whereof the mechanisms of action underneath the surface seem not obvious to us or familiar metaphors cannot be applied, or, scientifically measured parameters as I mentioned them in part I are missing, why do we tend to coin substances of this kind as placebo?

I agree that it is of great importance to be critical, to scrutinize cognition, self-perception, or our frames of references in specific situations to avoid self-deception, harmful delusions and disppointment. We get fooled so much in life, we need suspiciousness for survival. But nevertheless, we should not loose all our self-confidence in evaluating evidence.
I think this is what experience is all about, to be able to evaluate and develop an adequacy of judgement and assessment of our relation to reality.

Biestmilch is a 100% natural substance. Without biestmilch the offspring of many a species faces big problems to lead a decent life or even to survive. Breastfeeding is considered as essentiel for a baby during the first months in life. Babies who don't receive biestmilch are much more endangered to come down with immune problems.
Why do we have to doubt strong evidence like this so vehemently. In our archives are hundreds of case reports giving evidence of the power biestmilch. All placebo? No, there is no such thing like placebo!

There is not such a thing like a placebo, part I
This week I read an article about »placebo« in the famous Swiss Newspaper NZZ www.nzz.ch. This publication really discloses the possible absurdity of a scientific discourse. One might call this discourse »the endless scientific effort to scientifically prove the non-existence of the efficacy in the case of what... so ever substance!« It is given so much concern to the disapproval of everyday evidence. If clinical studies are performed the statistician has to account ca. 30% for the placebo effect, a tremendous amount. Why neglect 30% on the path to well-being? Isn't it a waste of time? There is medication that does not show any effect when given covert. On the other hand, there is amazing efficacy of a so-called placebo which we try so hard to neglect. Studies have and are performed to prove the existence of an placebo-effect. But what does efficacy mean in this case? It means that natural science with its standardized tool box has to be able to measure some parameters known to be related to a specific disease. If scientists don't succeed to prove the anticipated parameter profile of a disease, then they doubt an effect of the respective substance. Why does this justify the conclusion of inefficacy? What we don't know, does exist? Is this the weird logic behind? Studies have been able to prove brain activity! Placebo initiates brain activity. Here we are, this is straightforward a proof! Couldn't it be that there are other reasons for this activity? But who cares? Only scientists? Did nobody consider the fact, that our body follows certain rules, regardless from where the stimuli are sent, mental or physical origin, medicine, food or so-called placebo, the body processes the stimuli always following its own rules. Therefore the stimulus is not that important as we think. it is important that the message is sent and received. An example at the end of part I on placebos A selected group of volunteers with knee joint pains were assigned to 3 treatment groups. All of them had to undergo a knee operation. But only 2 of them got an invasive treatment. The knee operation of the third group was a fake, they only received a skin cut. After an observation period of 6 months the group without any invasive therapy showed the best results. They felt perfectly well. What do think about placebos? Is this term justified at all? Shouldn't we show more respect to evidence?
Is Advertising Dead? The bubble generation does not want to reached!

This is a headline of one of Guy Kawasakis http://blog.guykawasaki.com/ posts I liked in somehow. Is it because he strengthens my view on marketing and advertising? Yes, of course, this is one reason. But beware, one has to be careful not become blind for contrary notions.

He introduces the results of a panel he moderated (Churchill Club panel) called Next Generation Insights. It featured six Silicon Valley young adults whose ages ranged from fifteen to twenty four.

These are some factoids that he found interesting and I find worthwile to quote:

  1. The BubbleGeneration consumers will be harder to reach than any prior generation since the invention of language.
  2. They have taken technology to new places faster than traditional marketers (read:you) can cope.
  3. They don't need the old intermediaries to establish their tastes and preferences.
  • They send as many as 4,000 text messages per month from their phones.
  • They watch one to two hours of TV per week. And they use Tivo or a recording device to fast-forward through commercials during that short timeframe!
  • They all have iPods, and they are very loyal to Apple.
  • They buy approximately forty songs a month on iTunes.
  • Helio is the hot phone (though none of them had one). I had never heard of it before!

The bottom line message is that before you waste your marketing dollars, you should watch what the panelists had to say about these topics:

  • Their fascination with MySpace and FaceBook.
  • How they use their cell phones—and seldom use a landline.
  • How they use computers—and Microsoft Office!
  • The surprisingly high degree to which they resent being “marketed to.”
  • The even more surprising degree to which “old media’ like magazines (specifically Wired for the males and US for the females) are effective.
  • Their dislike of online advertising whether banner, pop-up, or an ad running before or after a free video clip.

GM, Dell and Nike: The Bubble Generation doesn't want to buy from you. But if they discover you on their own terms, they may invite you into their lives.
I hope one night, one day or so they will discover biestmilch and its fascinating world.

A tip for geeks and freaks

I am a Timbuk2 fan since years. In times of frustration due to what reasons so ever, it happens that I am caught up by this urge to treat myself with something special, then, www.timbuk2.com is one of the sites I visit.
Next week I am travelling to San Francisco. This time I am lucky, I am not obliged to order via their internet. I will have the chance to take a look at the new bag »the blogger« myself on site. Let's wait and see whether I can overcome the temptation. Or, shall I order later sitting back home again shaken by a bout of frustration, and pay the expensive freight to Europe on top?

Biestmilch requires a change of your familiar frame of reference; Part II

Usually, the scientific frame of reference whithin which we interpret our world is linear. We measure parameters and take them for irrevocable facts, and things we cannot measure are usually not real for us, we doubt their existence.

If a value deviates from its stastical mean we interpret this as deficits that asks for substitution. We look at our body as a composition of boxes of variable sizes that are filled with biochemical compounds. The conclusions are simple refuel the respective box and that's it. Sometimes this approach may be successful, but in most of the cases of modern chronic diseases therapies of this kind fail. This is why more and more people turn their backs on western rational scientific tradition. They look for alternatives. Naturopathy is one, biestmilch is part of this world.

Biestmilch is not a substitute for deficits, it is a substance that asks you to be ready to change your angle of reference, your observation point for coming closer to its value. In this world nothing is linear anymore, because it is all about regulation, about regulatory processes, and, regulation can never be linear from »A« to »B«. It is a circular world, where interdependency is normal and not the exception to the rule. Biestmilch is a mediator that influences regulatory processes, this process we call modulation.
