The heart in endurance performance: How robust is this machine ?

Myocarditis is one of major threats to the heart of an endurance athlete

If we consider how long a heart is able to beat without taking a break, this muscle can be called robust without any doubt. But during a life time this muscle is exposed to many risk factors beside the fact that congenital defects of different extent may play a crucial role in initiating cardiac issues sooner or later in life. Basically, a good life style of which physical activity is one pillar, is strengthening and securing your heart’s condition, but if the muscle is stressed too much and you overlook the early symptoms of overreaching, then the consequences may be serious or even lethal. The following chapter is meant to give an idea about the heart’s robustness on the one hand, and its fragility on the other. Continue Reading →

Did you know that … overtraining and a unspecific feeling of illness are closely connected?

The slightest sign of incipient overtraining: Heavy leg syndrom

The healthy aspects of regular workouts

The posts before have shown the dramatic outcomes of too much exercise and training. In between, I would like to take another perspective on the whole topic to encourage your efforts, and perhaps give you more cues at hand to make the detrimental results of too much training and racing more understandable.

Modern exercise physiology and biology put a lot of work into studying the healthy body. That has not been the case for many decades where scientists only looked at sick bodies. Exercise physiology gives an amazing insight into the body’s “normal” way of functioning. Continue Reading →

Recovery is the key to success or how to avoid overtraining

As many of you are heading for Kona and therefore are in their very hot phase of training I assume that the most helpful post would be to summarize the essential but discrete signs you have to watch out for to avoid overtraining.

Especially from studies that dealt with the effects of human growth hormone – a substance that is definitely on the WADA’s list and considered as doping – we know that performance enhancement is very closely related to recovery times. Continue Reading →
